Industrial C-mount telecentric lens

C-mount lens

A C-mount telecentric lens is used in applications where high accurate measurements are required. This is because a telecentric lens has reduced image distortion, constant magnification, high resolution, no perspective errors and no lens shading. This results in an image where the magnification, light intensity and distortion are uniform across the complete field of view.

The dimensions of a telecentric lens are always larger than the required Field of View. Online we offer our standard telecentric lenses for standard field of views. Do you need to inspect a large object? Please contact us so that we can offer our special C-mount telecentric lens.

How to mount a telecentric lens

Our telecentric lenses are c-mount compatible. They fit on our standard c-mount machine vision cameras. When using the telecentric lens horizontally, the lens needs to have a support bracket, otherwise the tension on the c-mount of the machine vision camera becomes too large.

While telecentric lenses offer unique advantages in machine vision applications, their mounting orientation can impact performance.  When mounted vertically, telecentric lenses technically don't require a dedicated support bracket. However, mechanical designers frequently choose to include one to address potential vibration issues.

A dedicated support bracket provides a more stable platform for the telecentric lens. By effectively mounting the lens to the main body of the machine, vibrations are minimized. This translates to sharper, clearer images, a critical factor for successful machine vision applications in tasks like inspection, measurement, and object recognition.

Telecentric lens with coaxial light input

Our telecentric lenses can be equipped with a coaxial light input.  When connecting a LED coaxial light, a half transparent mirror inside the telecentric lens will project the light through the lens on the object. It creates a uniform light without the need for an external light, making the setup very easy to integrate.

Understanding telecentric lenses in Machine Vision

Telecentric lenses play a pivotal role in machine vision systems by minimizing perspective errors and ensuring consistent magnification and perspective across the entire imaging area. Their unique optical configuration only allows light to enter the lens parallel, resulting in the light perpendicular to the image sensor. A special element inside the lens, called a telecentric stop, controls the light rays. This ensures they travel parallel before reaching the image sensor.

This characteristic enables accurate dimensional measurements and feature extraction, making telecentric lenses indispensable in computer vision applications for quality control, inspection, and maintenance across diverse industries.

Choosing the right telecentric lens

Our user-friendly lens calculator streamlines the process of identifying the ideal telecentric lens for your application. Simply input the desired lens magnification, sensor resolution (both horizontal and vertical), and pixel size. The calculator will then determine the corresponding field of view. Alternatively, to find the appropriate lens magnification, enter the sensor resolution and pixel size. You can then adjust the lens magnification value until the desired field of view is achieved.

Our team of vision experts is also readily available to assist you in navigating the lens calculator or addressing any inquiries you may have. Special lighting for telecentric lens

To maximize the potential of telecentric lenses in machine vision setups, specialized lighting options are available. Telecentric lighting, like their lens counterparts, these emit light in a strictly parallel direction. This synergy between telecentric lenses and telecentric lighting delivers a powerful advantage: highly accurate measurements.

The vast array of machine vision lighting designed specifically for telecentric lenses caters to a wide range of inspection tasks. By ensuring consistent and uniform illumination, these lighting solutions contribute to precise and reliable results in critical applications.

Comparison with standard industrial machine vision lens

Telecentric lenses distinguish themselves from conventional industrial lenses by maintaining constant magnification and minimal distortion. Unlike standard C-mount lenses that exhibit varying magnifications and distortion, telecentric lenses offer unparalleled precision and consistency in imaging, making them the preferred choice for critical measurement and inspection tasks in machine vision setups.

Applications in Machine Vision Industry

Telecentric lenses find widespread applications in the machine vision industry, spanning various sectors such as medical device manufacturing, automotive parts production, semiconductor fabrication, printing, and solar power industries. They are instrumental in quality control, inspection, and maintenance processes, enabling accurate measurements and defect detection in computer vision systems.
