What is an industrial USB2 camera?
USB2 is the most price competitive interface for industrial machine vision cameras. The
bandwidth is 40 megabytes per seconds. Therefore, do the cameras have a low frame rate. The maximum cable length of a USB2 camera is 4.5 meters. The big benefit of USB2 is that almost every computer has a USB2 port, whereby the USB camera can very easily send image data to various computer systems. These cameras are ideal for bioscience, medical applications, Internet of Things (IoT), laboratory measurements, microscopes and many more applications.
What is the difference between an industrial USB camera and a webcam?
A consumer USB camera, often named a webcam, is meant to capture images which are optimized for the human eye. Also, these images are often compressed. Due to these features of the webcam a precise measurement with an image processing program is often not possible. Daheng Imaging’s industrial USB2.0 cameras provide RAW image information to the computer. This RAW image information is ideal for image processing. Also, with our industrial cameras, it is possible to determine the exact moment of capturing your image down to microseconds. This is possible because our USB camera has a hardware trigger option. This feature of an industrial USB cameras is not possible with webcams. The last major difference between a webcam and an industrial USB camera is that every industrial USB camera model of Daheng Imaging is available for at least 7 years. While some webcam models are not available anymore only after 6 months.
What are the features of an industrial USB2.0 camera?
The features of this camera are:
- They are cheaper than USB2 or GigE cameras
- USB2 cables are cheap and have a maximum cable length of 4.5 meters
- Almost every computer has a USB2 port, you also do not need a
Frame-grabber
- Both the data communication and power supply for the USB camera are being supplied by the same USB2 cable
- The bandwidth is 40megabytes/second. Hereby can a 1.3 Megapixel camera capture maximum 25 images per second
- The camera is available with a version with a digital I/O and a version without a digital I/O (“-L”)
- It is easy to integrate in all image processing applications
A USB3 or USB2 camera?
If you are deciding on buying a USB3 or USB2 version, it is important to consider factors such as price, product life cycle and available drivers / SDK. If price is the most important factor, you should go for USB2, since that is cheaper. If you have more budget, go with USB3, since that is faster.
From a product life cycle point of view, USB3 is also the better choice. It will be available for a longer time, since it's a newer technology. Our Daheng Imaging USB 2.0 cameras can be controlled using the Daheng Imaging SDK; USB3 cameras offer more possibilities when it comes to controlling the camera.
